Finally a game is here that is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Yes such a seemingly spurious claim is easily made, but TellTale Games has come up with an offering that is hard to refuse. It’s called Poker Night at the Inventory and it’s feature-rich poker entertainment. Imagine my delight when I logged in to YouTube to watch a video pitting 4 poker cartoon characters alongside one another. You’ve got the commando action hero, a funky dude, a Lilo and Stitch funny figure and another cutesy hero all gaming at the poker tables.
Penny Arcade, TTG and Valve have teamed up to provide poker junkies with the ultimate animated thrill fest. By the way, the names of the characters are Max, Strong Bad, the Heavy and Tycho. Watching them interact with one another on the video had me laughing so hard – it brought life to animated humor to poker in a truly unique way.
What’s Poker Night at the Inventory all about?
Sean Vanaman is the brains trust behind Poker Night at Inventory. He’s the designer from TellTale Games and he’s got lots of animated genius driving him. This effort is an impressive collaboration between leading dudes to bring all their characters together outside of their cartoon space. It’s a ‘real’ contest where the folks can socialize and just shoot the breeze. And what happens at the ‘virtual table’ is that players engage in what is truly a bizarre scene. It’s weird because each character is acting true to his real identity outside of poker. They will act the same, talk the same and reference the same behavior – except that they’re sitting at a poker table with one another. To call it akin to a fish-out-of-water scenario is doing it justice – except with hilarious ramifications. If you’re as keen as I was to take a peek at this planned contest then here’s the link to Sean’s commentary.
From the poker side it’s No Limit Texas Hold’em. And you certainly don’t have to be a great player to play this game at all. Basically you can just sit in on the table and listen to Max, Tycho, Strong Bad and the Heavy talk about their lives, their perspectives on obscure stuff, poker and one another – then you’re going to love the offerings. The voice talents behind the virtual characters are the self-same stars you’d expect them to be. It’s authentic and entertaining in a well-designed gaming platform. The notable exception was Tycho though – figuring out his voice took some doing. Reflections from the Penny Arcade gambit spring to mind. In essence, the Inventory is a mutual speak-easy place where all of these much-loved characters can come to and enjoy one another’s company while playing poker. It’s a bar/venue/underground location that’s the perfect setting for a bunch of guys just wanting to have fun.
